Ways to Connect

Communication vs broadcast

We chose a communication mindset, rather than a broadcast approach – this is about talking WITH people, rather than AT or TO people. For this reason (and the general state of social media … ) we chose not to have an active presence on the major platforms.

We have a public communication channel using Matrix: https://matrix.to/#/#aquasavvy:matrix.org

Levels of communication

Our internal team communication is mainly done over email and video calls.

External communication with fellow professionals – currently these are by invitation over video call, and we hope to have more public facing seminars in due course. As the tool develops, we will engage more with water boards and other intermediary actors.

External communication with everyday engagement is still in development. We need to trade off the uncertainty in working with new research, with building a relationship with the members of the living labs, and reaching global engagement towards the end of the project.

Social media

As a project, we’re not a fan of social media anymore (our members do what they need to do). In today’s complex, rapidly evolving world, vast amounts of data exist in isolated silos, shared for corporate gain through polarizing algorithms. Rather than saying use this new platform, or that other platform, it is a democratic imperative to make this data become interoperable technically, and more importantly, culturally.

We are a small, academic team. We can’t manage all the socials. We struggle already to deal with our institutional emails and things. We would love to meet you, everywhere. In our world – the Metaverse – all the social media interoperates, but we’re not there yet.

So. We (will) have accounts on the major platforms, but it won’t be managed.

Go find your people, wherever you want to do that. And let’s talk, but let’s figure out together how to do this that works for all of us, where we are.

For the moment, we are sharing the OMI Discord – the forum post on Physical World Interoperability is particularly relevant.
